Death of an ivy

I heard a crash while I was, of course, blogging the other day and I went into the guest room only to fine this...

He ate a handful of dirt while I went to get the camera. He wasn't even sorry.

"Beautiful" additions

I think I mentioned in my list of 101 Things About Me that I am part of two fabulous groups: The Beautifuls and The Ramrons.

The Beautifuls is a group of 4 of us from high school who have kept up all this time (we're about to have our 10 year reunion next month) and we get together every summer for a weekend retreat at which time we bring a big cake we've ordered and open presents for all of our birthdays (none of which are really IN the summer). Our name is an inside joke, rather, an inside long-story that has nothing to do with our thinking we are actually beautiful. Here we are a couple years ago at Amy's bridal shower. L to R: Brooke, Cheryl, Amy, me. Anyway, this post is really to CONGRATULATE Amy because she just told me that she and her husband found out they are having a little BOY! Noah is quite excited to have another friend. Congrats Amy, boys are so fun!

Okay, so now I have to congratulate another friend of mine, from another group of mine. :) The Ramrons is a group of 7 of us from college who also get together for a retreat every summer. We've been doing this for about 7 years, and have recently included some husbands and kids, but then decided that the purpose of a retreat is to get away, and therefore it might be just the girls again next year... In any case, I also found out last night that my friend Christy (below, in the green maternity shirt I purchased for her, thank you) just had a baby GIRL last night. CONGRATS to Christy and her husband on their first! This picture is only 6 of us, the 7th is in the Ukraine for the next several years, and I couldn't find a picture of all of us in my computer. We miss you Kelly!

By the way, since there have been a few blogs floating around about people feeling pressured to have children, I feel I must add that this in no way is meant to add to that. Both couples I'm writing about have members in their late 20s-early 30s and have been married several years!!

In Answer to the Clothes Whore

Many of you may have read my sister's recent blog about being a "Clothes Whore No More." Needless to say, I was in the midst of cleaning out my closet at the same time, and was inspired to clean out a little more than I originally intended. Here's the original pile:

My husband then asked for the honor of throwing out anything in my closet that he hadn't seen me wear in about a year, so I let him. Interestingly, he is a much bigger clothes whore than I am, ask anyone who knows him; he's such a Gap ad. Anyway, another day another blog... Sooo, he started with my shoes. I was embarrassed as he tossed out shoes so dusty I couldn't tell if they were brown or black. Check out the dust film and the squared toes on these babies:

So, Rachel, be proud! I stand united with you as a Recovering Clothes Whore, determined to only make good quality, well fitting purchases from this moment on. Here's the final pile set to go to those lucky guys down at the Salvation Army:

P.S. Is it ghetto to give away non-holey, washed but "gently used" underwear?

Spit? Swollow? Vomit?

Before I became an Occupational Therapist, I worked on the acute wing of a psych unit at a hospital in the midwest. I was thrown against a wall by a 41 year-old mentally handicapped sex addict, was pooped on by a man just after he told me I didn't look like all the other Russians he'd dealt with, and I walked in on an 87 year old man trying to masterbate. However nothing prepared me for what happened last night...

I picked my 10-month old son up from homecare yesterday after work and took him home and we were playing all kinds of fabulous games. He was all smiley and giggly, so of course I was tossing him up in the air and swinging him all around when it happened... He puked. Not like baby spit-up either. Adult vomit complete with the smell that only adult vomit has. Guess where it landed? You can imagine that if I was holding Noah up something like this... (this is an old picture but for dramatization's sake):

Yep, right in my mouth and down my neck. I actually choked a little and swollowed some of it before yakking it out all over my neck. It was warm. It was running down my chin and chest and filled up the inner parts of my bra cups. Noah looked at the drippy vomit and he literally laughed. Little pecker. Sorry I didn't stop to take a picture for this blog entry, I ran into the bathroom and began throwing water on my face and into my mouth. I think I spit like 100 times, then brushed my teeth for about 6 minutes before throwing the toothbrush away. I then took a bath with the kid, but kept his diaper on b/c I wasn't going to tempt fate...

Apparently this is like a rite of passage for parents, but it is NOT cute and I would rather it NEVER happen again. Oh, and the worst thing about it is that the rest of the evening Noah would look at me and say, "Daddy?" over and over. Everything I went through and he can't even reward me with a little jarbled "mommy." He's gonna hear about this for the rest of his life when he does something wrong. The only thing I could think of that could be worse would be if it were your dog...

Big Bang Theory

Always wanting the cute kid from the BabyGap ads with long, wavy, blonde hair, it was difficult for my husband and I to make the decision to get Noah's hair cut--for the first time. I'll admit my decision was heavily influenced by the fact that I wanted to decorate the "first haircut" page of the baby book. However, the deciding factor was that my 10 month old was brushing his bangs from his eyes regularly; I guess the cute long-haired kids have achieved this look in a controlled way to assure they don't end up looking like cousin It.

Before. Note the reverse mullet that Mimsies constantly reminded me of.

During. Unsure of the whole process, I had to bribe him with treats.

During. The Baby Faux-Hawk.

After. Mullet, No More! A successful visit to SnipIts and my son can see again!

It's all in a name

I was cleaning my bookshelf this morning and ran across this book. Someone gave it to me when I was pregnant; if anyone out there is pregnant, for the love of all that is holy and pure, don't get a copy. It is wrong and includes all manner of nasty graphic pictures of births where the women are haing their babies in positions that are probably more similar to how the baby got in than how it should come out.

Anyway, for the first time I noticed the name of the 2nd author: Lars Hamberger. How unfortunate is that? I was on the phone with my sister at the time and we got a pretty good laugh, so I thought I'd share. :)

My fingernails

These are my fingernails. This is probably the longest they've ever been. They are manicured. I am very proud of them. As I mentioned in my 101 Things, I bite my nails until they bleed, and have never been able to grow them out. This does not stop me from trying every 6 months or so, by taking my omnipresent acrylics off and getting the flimsy real ones manicured, and swearing that this time I am really serious about it.

All those other futile attempts set aside, this time I am really serious about it. My plan is to post a picture of my nails on a regular basis, open for either praise or ridicule. I've heard it is a more difficult habit to break than smoking. They should make a patch for this.

If

In my list of 101 Things About Me, I mentioned that my favorite literary work is Rudyard Kipling's poem If so I thought I'd share it with you all:

"If you can keep your head when all about you
are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
but make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
and yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
and treat these two imposters just the same:
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken,
twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
and stoop and build ‘em up with worn out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
and risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
and never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
to serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!"

101 Things About Me

My sister told me I should do this, she has a list as well and said it was fun to write so I pretty much copied the idea. I recommend everyone making one of these as it was an adventure in reminiscing. I had to look through like 4 photo albums when I was finished.

1. I am 28 years old and live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. My husband, Greg, and I have been married for 8 years; we have a 3 -year old son, Noah, and a 1 year old baby girl, Lauren. Greg is in art direction and advertising.

2. According to my driver’s license, I am 5’ 8”. I claim to be 5’ 8” whenever asked. I’m really 5’ 7 ½ ”.

3. I had red hair as a child, blonde as a teen, and now dirty blonde as an adult. I have had really bad hair phases, including a short, permed Orphan Annie 'do.

4. I grew up in the midwest and moved to the south in 5th grade. I was a nerd with permed hair, big teeth, and braces. The transition was not easy.

5. I ate grass when I was little because I was pretending to be a horse.

6. My husband is my favorite person. We have so much fun together and laugh all the time because we’re both so sarcastic about everything. We go grocery shopping together and he totally goes to the mall with me (although not as much lately). He always calls me on his way home from work.

7. I am an Occupational Therapist, and specialized in upper extremity rehabilitation for 4 years. Basically, I did physical rehab for patients with all kinds of hand, arm, and shoulder injuries/traumas. I am fascinated by how intricate our hands are, and I love the gory stuff like seeing someone the day after surgery and having to clean around the stitches. I also teach an upper extremity splinting and casting course for an OT graduate school.

8. Though I'm an OT by trade, I decided to take some official time off from healthcare as the hours weren't conducive to having young kids. I am not, however, cut out to stay at home every day, and I had an amazing opportunity to office from home and work for a ministry organization that Greg and I have supported for years. I love it!

9. I have a weakness for a really good church hymn. My favorite hymns are “Crown Him with Many Crowns” and “By the Sea of Crystal.”

10. I wet my bed until I was 9.

11. After I wet the bed, I rolled my sister to my side of the bed and I slept on her side so I wouldn’t get in trouble…or have to sleep in wet pee.

12. I had bladder surgery when I was little; apparently my incessant bed wetting was the result of an actual medical condition.

13. I love the little meals you get on the airplane. I always considered the airplane ride as part of the vacation, and I looked forward to it, but with two kids it's now more of a means to an end.

14. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother. There were 4 of us in 5 years. I was always closer to my brother as a child, I think because I was a tomboy. We built forts and had a secret club called Boosum-sooum-sooum. It involved a written language called Zoik that we still know. My sisters tried to have their own club and called it Lurla, but it never really got off the ground.

15. My husband and I waited 5 years before having any children, and got pregnant the first month that we decided we wanted to. Greg is very proud of himself for this.

16. I was raised in a small Dutch town in the midwest. Being Dutch was a way of life; there was a Tulip Tower in the town square, a pond shaped like a wooden shoe, and the town information center was in a windmill. We all had Dutch costumes and had to walk in parades every year for the Tulip Festival wearing them; adults and kids of all ages wore these elaborate costumes. All the businesses and schools were closed for 3 days. Everyone ate funnel cakes and thought it was great fun.

17. My favorite candy bars are Twix and KitKat.

18. I am very thankful for my husband, Greg, who is this amazing guy who does the dishes every night and has cleaned more floors and bathrooms in our house than I ever have. He also does the laundry without asking, and never has to ask how to take care of our son. He mops floors, and he has an obsession with various kinds of Tilex for the showers. Not that he's girly mind you; he loves hiking and snowboarding, and can pull a pretty mean backflip on a wakeboard. He's an avid soccer player and has managed to break both thumbs and tear his ACL during games.

19. I love sign language. I worked at a psych hospital with a deaf girl for almost a year, and learned a lot of it. I’ve since forgotten almost everything, but I keep a book of American Sign Language by my bed and I try to re-learn a couple new signs here and there.

20. I get really excited when I find a front row parking space.

21. I invented a club as a child called the “Tender Animal Care Club” or TACC, for short. The only other members were my little sister and a neighbor girl. We walked around the neighborhood looking for hurt animals to take care of.

22. Both of my parents had leukemia when I was 19. They were diagnosed 11 months apart. When my mom died, my dad was being treated for the exact same disease just down the hall from her; he had to get a day pass from the hospital to go to her funeral and was brought immediately back. My dad never relapsed, and has been in remission for almost 9 years.

23. I love to cook, but don’t always follow directions. I improvise often.

24. I bite my nails until they bleed and throb. Every 6 months or so, I try desperately to grow them out. I fail miserably each time. My dad once offered me $500 to buy clothes if I could grow out my fingernails. He gave me one year. I couldn’t do it. I now buy my nails.

25. I went into labor 8 days before my due date with my 1st child. It was a Tuesday night & Greg called me on his way home from work and asked me to meet him for dinner and a movie, saying we might not be able to go on another date for awhile. I had 2 contractions in the movie that were more painful than the Braxton Hicks I'd been having. After the movie I had another contraction and Greg said, "We're going to have a baby tonight, aren't we?" I said I thought so. When we got home I took a shower and made sure everything was ready to go. I layed down but couldn't sleep (obviously, my uterus was on fire) and finally called the doctor at 2:30am. Greg refused to get out of bed and asked if I could hold off until the morning. I think my exact words were too inappropriate to mention, but they worked. We got to the hospital at 3:15am, I got my blessed epidural at 4:30am, and didn't feel another thing so I started calling my family and friends; I was very chatty and excited. Noah was born at 8:14am.

26. I can recite the entire courtroom speech Jack Nicholson gives to Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men, starting with, “You can’t handle the truth!...”

27. I really love soccer, but I haven’t played on a team in like 8 years. My husband plays, and Noah and I watch him. We go to a lot of MLS games, and we actually missed seeing our son stand up for the first time because we were watching the World Cup finals this year!

28. I am very competitive.

29. I was completely undeveloped until college. I distinctly remember my mom buying my little sister a padded bra and I was so mad.

30. I cannot fathom a social gathering without food. Little appetizers are my favorite.

31. My dad got remarried just 5 days after Greg and I got married. His wife, Carol, is amazing and was a technology executive, and now does freelance consulting. She and I planned our weddings together and shared flowers and plants for the church; it was a blast! A couple days before my wedding, my dad and I sat in the living room, drank wine, and talked about our impending marriages.

32. I took belly dancing a long time ago and had to dance at a Turkish restaurant on a weekend as my final exam.

33. I was OBSESSED with MacGyver when I was younger. I made my dad buy me a pocket knife and I carried it everywhere. I wrote "Mac" a letter and memorized his address. It is 8899 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048. I currently own the entire first 3 seasons on DVD.

34. I vacuum my house like 3 times a week. I clean the kitchen daily. I can totally relate to Monica on Friends.

35. My birthday is 6 days before Christmas. I love it because I absolutely love the Christmas season and all the decorations and music involved.

36. My husband doesn’t like me to do his laundry because I once put too much bleach in the white load and burned holes in some of his tee-shirts.

37. Our first year of marriage, Greg and I waited outside of Wal-Mart for 10 hours to buy a Playstation 2 the morning it came out for his birthday. It was my gift to him.

38. The Playstation 2 was stolen out of our apartment a year later when we were robbed.

39. I took gymnastics and piano lessons for 10 years growing up.

40. My mom was a registered nurse who also did a lot of volunteer work for adoptions agencies and crisis pregnancy clinics. She was also a goofball who often talked in a baby voice if she wanted us to do something. She had vibrantly blond hair her whole life, and wide cheekbones that I inherited. She also had a fabulous laugh.

41. I love number puzzles and word games. I’m kind of a nerd. I could play Scattergories and Boggle for hours, in fact, I've been known to play alone.

42. Someone in middle school once called me “Geek of the Week” and I still remember it; I went home and cried.

43. I have broken both of my wrists. One was in 8th grade; I tripped while doing the highjump. The other was the first year of marriage when Greg was teaching me how to snowboard. I knew I broke my wrist, but he told me I was being a wuss, so I kept boarding for 3 more days. When we got home I went to a surgeon who said I broke and displaced my scaphoid and would need to wear a cast for 3 months or have surgery. Greg has never lived this down and he never will.

44. I lost a bet in high school and had to get my bellybutton pierced. I don’t remember what the bet was about, but I know it had nothing to do with piercings or body art. I kept it pierced until I was huge and pregnant. When I turned 30 I got my nose pierced.

45. I have a huge list of words that freak me out and that I have a hard time saying or hearing. Among them are abreast, plump, pupil, papacy, and secrete. That was even hard to type. For more, see my sister's list of annoying words. She has the same issue.

46. I have a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy.

47. I hate it when people touch my face.

48. My dad is a pastor and is one of the most amazing people I know. He is brilliant and has a gift for always putting things in perspective for us. He and Carol live in Florida, but I talk to him several times a week and see them often. Carol is such an amazing part of our family and it was so cool to see the Lord bring them together.

49. I ran track and played soccer in high school. I could always run fast and was very athletic, which kind of saved me because for all other intensive purposes I was a bit of a nerd.

50. My younger sister used to always ask me to say “26 mangos” because I could say it in this strange voice and it happened to have all the right syllables to sound funny. I have no idea where it came from.

51. I can raise the corners of my lips up and down like Elvis. I can also flare my nostrils, wiggle my ears, and curl my eyelashes (not eyelids) inside out.

52. I have bunions and callouses on my feet.

53. I have lots of moles. Whenever I go to the dermatologist to have them checked out, he always looks really pensive and says, “My, you have a lot of scattered nevi, don’t you?”. Um, yes, thanks doctor. I know.

54. I think my dermatologist is adorable; he’s a thirtysomething Harvard grad who sags his pants and has a slight lisp.

55. I had 22 pre-cancerous moles removed in one year.

56. About 6 weeks after I had my son, I got strep throat really bad and lost all my pregnancy weight, plus about 10 pounds. It was the best post-baby diet ever. It sucked at the time, but I didn’t have to work hard or anything.

57. My brother and I once made homemade Num-chucks and ran around throwing them at one of the neighbor kids. He deserved it because he climbed our evergreen tree and pooped from the top of it.

58. I think there is something wrong with my dog. She is supposedly a lab/border collie mix, but she doesn’t retrieve anything, and she hates the water. All she wants to do all day is run around in circles. Also, she doesn’t know how to bark. She can only make this weird, throaty, guttural groan that sounds like she’s saying “rugrats.” When she really tries to bark, she sneezes.

59. My mom and I used to watch Neil Diamond concerts on TV in her room late at night whenever they were on. We sang loudly and our favorite songs were "Shiloh" and "Brother Love Salvation Show."

60. When I was pregnant I craved dark beer and cereal (though not together). I did not indulge in the beer, although friends from church brought me a 6 pack in the hospital after I had Noah!

61. I have been a Christian my whole life, and we attend a Bible Church in Irving. We're actively involved in the children's ministry and in our Sunday school class. We recently moved closer to our church and our friends so that we could be a more dynamic part of things.

62. I hate mushrooms in or on anything. Their texture freaks me out and their taste is no better.

63. When I was a little girl I wanted to change my name to Linda.

64. Our family dog growing up was a Bishon named Maggie. She was named after an actress on As The World Turns that my mom really liked at the time. We had Maggie for 15 years! After my mom died, Maggie became really depressed and got very sick. My dad had her put to sleep, then called me and my sister at college and told us after it was over! I remember we cried in the middle of campus together after we found out.

65. My aspiration when I was little was to be a veterinarian. I used to perform surgeries on my stuffed Himalayan cats.

66. I bought my wedding dress 4 months before my husband proposed to me. He told me he loved me one night, and I bought a dress that weekend. I ended up telling him about it while standing at the altar at our wedding during one of the songs.

67. I hardly ever cry about real life events (actually, emotional situations usually make me feel super uncomfortable), but I am a wreck during movies and TV commercials where someone does something extraordinarily nice for someone else (Extreme Home Makeover just about kills me).

68. I also get misty-eyed every time I hear a good rendition of pretty much any patriotic song. This includes the National Anthem, I'm Proud to be an American, or Celine Dion's version of God Bless America (which pretty much kills me).

69. My favorite Thai foods are Panang Curry and Tofu Pad Thai.

70. I can watch the movie Twister over and over. I think it has poor acting and a far-fetched theme, but it never gets old. Once I actually watched it, rewound it, and watched it again.

71. In junior high and high school I ran the 400 meter sprint in track. I hated it and had stomachaches the entire day before and day of a race. I ran it for 6 years and won all kinds of medals, but to this day I can’t watch that race in the Olympics without feeling my stomach churn.

72. My name, Jaclyn Sue, came from my grandpa Jack and my mom (Sue). My mom got the spelling, however, from Jaclyn Smith of Charlie’s Angels. She apparently liked using TV characters to help her with names (see #49).

73. My favorite literary work is the poem If by Rudyard Kipling.

74. My biggest regret is not going to medical school.

75. I followed a boy to college (I had dated him for 2 years in high school) and broke up with him freshman year after meeting my soon-to-be husband.

76. My cocktails of choice are beers (Michelob Ultra and Shiner), Pomegranate martinis, and margaritas with salt.

77. I would almost always go to an Italian restaurant over anything else.

78. I am annoyingly organized.

79. I think my husband has beautiful hair and cheekbones, but I always tell him his toes are sort of transparent.

80. I love trying to get things for free. I always ask waiters at restaurants if we can get free dessert because of a birthday or random holiday, and I love to get free samples.

81. I’ve been pulled over more than 20 times but only have 2 tickets on my record. Once I pretended to recognize the officer, and once I gestured to the Chipotle in the front seat of my Jeep and invited the cop to my work to have lunch with our office. I’ve been pulled over for speeding, parking in a handicap zone, running a stopsign, not wearing my seatbelt, and reckless driving. The fastest I was ever going was 97mph in a 60 zone, and I got a warning. I am not proud of this, and since having children I have really tried to drive more cautiously.

82. I hate it when people use poor grammar or pronunciation, or use a word incorrectly.

83. I LOVE getting massages but I get them very rarely.

84. I was never embarrassed of my parents. I always thought they were cool and was proud when they came up to school.

85. I have a group of 3 highschool friends; the 4 of us call ourselves The Beautifuls (long story that is actually not conceited). We get together every summer for a weekend retreat during which time we celebrate all our birthdays complete with cake, presents, and lots of food. This year we went to an isolated farmhouse and sang karaoke on X-Box, watched movies, cooked, drank coffee on a wrap-around porch in the morning, and wore pajamas for 3 days.

86. I also have a group of 7 college friends called the Ramrons. We get together for a retreat every summer as well. Everyone has kids, so we ditch them with the husbands and lounge by the pool, go out for sushi, eat brunch every morning, make predictions for the following year, and drink wine coolers or some other girly “umbrella” drink. Occasionally we bring our families along for part of it so we can see all our kids growing up.

87. When I was 3, I fell down the stairs while carrying a glass jar, and a piece of glass lodged just below my left eye. I had to have 36 stitches, internal and external, but the surgeon did a great job because the scar is hardly noticeable.

88. I have crow’s feet and want to get botox or Restylane. I recently discovered Olay Regenerist Eye Serum and it will have to do for now.

89. I refer to scissors as a singular noun. For example, I say, “Do you have a scissors?” This drives my husband crazy. It’s also hypocritical of me considering #82.

90. One of my very best friends is named Stacey. Stacey and I lived together our senior year in college and were engaged at the same time so we planned our weddings together. We married guys who were friends and played soccer together, then moved to the same area in Texas. For several years the 4 of us got together every Thursday night to cook and watch Friends. We have traveled to the Caribbean and to Hawaii together, and they had their son 6 weeks after I had Noah, and on my birthday nonetheless! Furthermore, They had a baby girl 4 months after we had Lauren. We still see each other weekly. It's all fate!

91. My first job was at a frozen yogurt store. We terrorized that place. I once had a bandaid on my finger and lost it in a vat of frozen yogurt. We also used to put random objects in the middle of the ice-cream cakes, and we ripped all the gummy worms in half.

92. I love watching Greg play soccer because his usually calm, laid-back demeanor is replaced by violence and aggression. I think it's sexy.

93. I was a bossy child.

94. I was very stubborn as a child, and I never cried (see #67). Once when my dad spanked me, I said, “For a big guy, you sure don’t hit very hard.”

95. It drives me crazy how my husband says the word 'helicopter' – “heel-a-copter.”

96. My mom took me to see the movie Up Close and Personal with Robert Redford when I was in highschool. The theme song was I’m Everything I am Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion. From then on, every time one of us heard the song, we’d call the other one up. She had the school secretary put a note on my locker once that said, “Your mom heard your song at 12:57pm today and says hi.”

97. I love salt. I salt my food before I taste it. My husband jokes about buying me a saltlick.

98. In college, Greg and I parked my car in a field and made out for like 4 hours. It had rained so the field was muddy and my car got stuck. We had to walk 2 miles to a payphone and call his roommate at 3am to come get us. His roommate brought another friend, and they got their truck stuck trying to pull my car out. They went and got two more guys who brought a huge truck with a wench and pulled both cars out. It was kind of like that going-to-school-naked dream coming to life. I was mortified.

99. In highschool I had to make a family tree. Everyone else’s was like 1 page. Mine was on a poster board and I traced it like 14 generations back, most of whom were in the Netherlands. We are 100% Dutch, and my ancestors were barons and baronesses. There is some creepy family pride associated with this.

100. I had braces for 3 years, have had 2 oral surgeries, and have had all 4 wisdom teeth removed (I got lock-jaw and dry socket). I never had a cavity until this year (my precious son took all my calcium when I was pregnant). I am so scared of the dentist that I pay $35 extra for laughing gas when I go.

101. I make a killer meatloaf.

My family

Hello! I would like to formally introduce my family; my husband, Greg and my son, Noah. Greg and I met in college and got married about 2 weeks after graduation. We waited about 5 years before thinking about starting a family because we were having so much fun just "picking up" and traveling and getting together with friends and family. We refer to last summer as our 'Holy Crap' summer because we bought our first house, got our first dog, and were pregnant with our first baby. It was all very much a whirlwind, but we love our new family and have still managed to travel quite a bit; Noah has been on 3 plane trips in his first 8 months of life! You'll be seeing more photos of these boys, I'm sure; they are my pride and joy! :)

Happy Birthday, Aunt Rachel!

Dear Auntie Rachel,
I'm sorry this is a day late, but my parents worked yesterday and they won't let me use the computers at daycare ever since I threw up on the keyboard. I wanted to say Happy Birthday to you myself, and I hope you appreciate it because this typing is taking forever since I don't really know how to use my hands very well. Anyway, here's my message to you! Love, Noah
P.S. Say hi to Uncle Jared.
P.P.S. Pull Murphy's hair for me.

Ode to Mimsies

I dedicate this site to my sister, Mimsies, who called me up last night and informed me that she made me a blogsite complete with her own rendition of my profile that included information about body hair, therapy, and william shatner. She's getting back at me for all those times I told her I wouldn't play with her unless I got to use her brand new Jem doll, and stuck her with the old barbie with frizzy hair. My sister, Rachel, is 2 years younger than me; we were always mistaken for twins which made for some fierce competition when we were little, but we also have always had the same sick, dry humor that makes for a whole lot of fun now.

Anyway, I decided to change some of her details and add my own, and officially have a site. So please bear with me as I figure out all things HTML so I can get this thing off the ground.
