Move Over Bono??

I'm wasn't having any problems with the fact that I'm turning 30 this year until yesterday at work. I was doing therapy on 2 patients; an 18 year old guy and a 13 year old girl.
Here's what followed:

18y/o: So I'm going to a Brad Paisley concert!

Me: Who's Brad Paisley?

18 y/o and 13 y/o in unison: WHAT? Are you an idiot? He's only like the most famous country singer of ALL TIME!

Me: Oh. I don't listen to country music. I do get to go see The Fray this summer, and maybe John Mayer.

18 y/o: Who's The Fray?

13 y/o: Who's John Mayer? Have you seen anyone cool in concert?

Me: Seriously? I've seen Dave Matthews several times and U2 and year and a half ago.
(actually I was too pregnant to go to U2 so my husband went but I was trying to make a point).

18 y/o: OK. I know one of Dave Matthews' songs. BUt if you asked anyone who they know better, I SWEAR 9 out of 10 people would know more Brad Paisley songs than Dave Matthews songs.

13 y/o: Obviously.

18 y/o: And U2 only has one good hit. Something called Vertigo I think. Do they even sing anything else?

13 y/o: Don't know any Dave Matthews. What's U2?

---------------
I had nothing further to say. Am I getting so old that teenagers today actually don't know these bands, or did I enter the twilight zone of two freakish kids stuck in a stereotypic Texas country music video?? Someone reassure me...

They are living in the boondocks.

Who in the world hasn't heard of U2?

p.s. you're not old.

That is too funny. Apparently their parents are not educating them on good music!

I'm 40. 10 years ago when I was working as an optician, a funny looking skinny guy with long hair and weird clothes came into my shop as one of the screws had fallen out of his glasses. A couple of teenagers were in the shop with me. They were staring at him with their mouths open. I figured because he was funny looking. He was very pleasant. After he left this was my conversation:

Them: "Do you know who that was???"

Me: "No."

Them: "Steven Tyler!!!"

Me: blank stare, who is Steven Tyler?

Them: "The lead singer of Aerosmith!!!" (looking at me like I had a 3rd eye in the middle of my forehead for not knowing this)

Me: "Oh, I've heard of Aerosmith."

So my joke (old optician joke)... I gave Steven Tyler a free screw.

Loved Sarah's comment. Seriously, I think those kids are odd. My students are 18 but they listen to both DMB and U2. (I know this because I always ask questions on the roll sheet about favorite bands/TV shows, etc.) Oh, and they also like Grey's Anatomy, which means they listen to The Fray. I think only one student has ever mentioned liking Brad Paisley in the 6 classes I've taught - so no, I don't think those kids are a reliable cross-section of American teen taste. No worries.

And even if you WERE an old fogey? At least you got taste. Brad Paisley... why, he's just corny.

Mamalife,
I would have died to give Steven Tyler a free screw!!! ;)

I think those kids are just wierd.

Sorry for butting in to the blog comments but mamalife's was awesome. Huge Aerosmith fan here!

I agree with Sarah & Rachel - You just happened to run into 2 kids with abnormal musical tastes.

OK, I'm going to say these kids are freakishly weird. U2 is such a huge band it's impossible not to know them. They have their own iPod for goodness sake. Bono was on American Idol last week. That's just ridiculous. They were trying to be "cool" would be my guess.

You are seriously not old!!

Oh, and my sincerest apologies about having to skip U2. They are so great in concert!

No, you just happened to run into a couple of kids who are country music fans (like me!), not rock fans. Don't worry, you're not getting old! If you were, that would mean that I am, too...

Oh, and, HEY! Liking country music is NOT weird or abnormal!!! Harumph.
>:-(

amy - I'm also a country music fan, explains why I didn't know who Steven Tyler was!

Yep... we are getting older. Fun stuff huh?

I can not believe that! Brad paisley is a complete dork and they don't know who U2 is? Obviously they have been raised in the sticks with only country radio playing. They probably like Carrie underwood too......

euch!

I taught this leadership class about 2 years back and the first day is all about getting to know the class, etc. So everyone picks a partner and they give eachother a nick name based on their names. We give 2 highschool students scholarships to be part of the program and then the rest are all business people from the community. So one of the guys last name was Duran. Naturally, his partner gave him the nick name of Duran-Duran, like the band. So the highschooler speaks up with an, "I don't get it." And I tell her, it's like the band. Yeah, she drew a complete blank and had no idea who they were. Ouch.

As far as I'm concerned, U2 will never be classified as a "golden oldie".
